Aimed at working journalists, or those in related sectors, this course prepares you to sit the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) preliminary qualifications. 

The course is offered on a day release basis over approximately 20 weeks, each Friday. The day's provision is divided into four discrete units allowing students to study any or all of the four subjects according to individual preference and need.

Areas studied are:

  • Scottish law
  • Public affairs
  • Shorthand
  • News writing

You may progress onto NCTJ recognition.

Entry requirements

It is preferable that candidates are staff journalists on local, regional or national publications, or within the broadcast media. However it is possible to offer places to candidates who have freelance experience or other related media experience, i.e. Public Relations professionals.
